History
Origins & patronage
Kota Doria is woven in and around Kota city in Rajasthan. The tradition traces to the late 17th century when Rao Kishore Singh of Kota state brought weavers from Mysore to settle at Kaithoon and Sultanpur villages on the outskirts of Kota. The weave’s identifying "khat" or "square-check" structure is achieved with a specific counting of warp and weft threads that produces the transparent grid — 8 warp and 8 weft threads per "khat" for a fine Doria. The tradition received a Geographical Indication in 2005.

The identifying feature is the "khat" — a small square check woven into the fabric structure itself, giving the saree its transparent grid appearance; woven in a mix of silk and cotton (about 40:60 by weight) — silk in the warp for strength, cotton in the weft for coolness; borders often carry small zari or gold-thread motifs (booti, keri, kalka); the drape is exceptionally light — a full Kota Doria weighs under 300 grams.

Kaithoon village (Kota district) is the primary weaving cluster with roughly 2,000 looms, all pit-looms operated by Muslim weaver families whose ancestry traces to the 17th-century Mysore migration; Sultanpur and small villages nearby add another 500 looms.
How to spot a real one
Authenticity guide
The khat squares are the giveaway — hold the fabric up and you can see the transparent grid clearly; the border zari has a slightly cool, silver-tinged tone (unlike the warm gold of Kanjivaram or Kasavu); Kota Doria is unusually light and airy — you can crush a 6-yard drape into a fist; the Kota Doria GI tag is the assurance.
